The acronym SYNAH stands for Sometimes You Need A Hole. Both the gallery space and the structure it houses are inaccessible to the audience, making SYNAH an inherently voyeuristic experience. The womblike environment is housed in a wooden armature that is unable to support an individual's weight, and the gallery itself is off limits to the public due to seismic instability. SYNAH is a hole no one can physically inhabit.
SYNAH was commissioned by The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery for their Grove Street location, which was formerly their main gallery and is now a very large storefront facing City Hall.
